Walk, Shop and Think Pink

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While you should be doing self-exams every month, this month is a great time to sport your pink, support the cause and get educated about the facts:
  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.
  • The chance of a woman having breast cancer during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 36. (American Cancer Society)

While breast cancer awareness can become glamorized in the media, there’s nothing pretty about these stats. The good news is death rates are decreasing thanks to research, better treatments and earlier detection. You can find out ways to lower your risk here.

This Sunday, I’ll be sporting my pink and walking with my boyfriend, this adorable nugget, my boss (a recent breast cancer survivor) and a few colleagues at Making Strides Boston for the 5th year in a row.

Below are some fashionable ways to support the cause. Every company likes to get in on the “shop pink” action – from Sephora, Uggs and True Religion to Under Armour, Nike and the NFL. Be sure to do your research when buying things that claim to support breast cancer research. Some may only give a small portion of the funds to the cause – or none at all!

I like to buy my gear straight from the source. The forecast is rainy for Sunday so I may have to pick up one of these!
