I made this playlist for last weekend’s girls trip to Vegas. Now that I’m back home with a bad case of post-vaca blues, I find myself playing these songs on repeat, daydreaming of our pool party days and club-hopping nights. A mix of country and hip hop, they’re all perfect “windows down, care-free cruising” jams. Especially now that (fingers crossed) the warmer weather is here to stay!
Needless to say, the 9 of us (4 girlfriends from high school and 4 from college) had an absolute BLAST and we’re already planning next year’s destination…
This morning was a true test of will power to get out of bed and squeeze in a run before work. I’d taken a few days off from running and it’s always hard getting back into the swing of things…plus it’s freezing outside…plus it’s Monday, and not just any old Monday but a Monday that most people have off. I tried not to think about my friends sleeping in late in their comfy, warm beds, and instead thought about the half marathon I’m running in less than three weeks. I’ll be in San Fran (more on that later) and signed up for the Golden Gate Trail Run with my best friend who lives out there. From everything we’ve read/heard, the course is a BEAST. The fear this course has instilled in me was enough to finally get me out of bed this morning, but in case you’re not into using fear tactics to motivate yourself, I’ve put together a playlist of songs that always push me to go that extra mile:

With nearly a week left until my half, my runs are tapering off and it’s time to work out all the details. One thing I don’t have to worry about is putting together the perfect race day playlist. I asked my friends and family to do it for me and support Dana Farber Cancer Institute in the process. And boy, did they step up to the challenge!
On the list are some favorite go-to running songs, some middle school throwbacks (appropriate since I’ll be running past my middle, elementary and high schools), songs that will remind me of particular memories and probably make me laugh out loud, and some new songs I haven’t heard before. It’s quite the eclectic mix – rap, country, dance, pop and indie – and will definitely keep me distracted as I run, thinking about what song could be next.
Thank you soo much to everyone that donated. The support of the person behind each song will hopefully be just the motivation I need to keep going all 13.1! Most importantly, we already raised over $400 for Dana Farber. And it’s not too late to add a song to the list!
Whether it’s in belting out a song in the car while in traffic, matching my running stride to the beat of the song playing in my ear, or plugging my headphones into my laptop so I don’t annoy my cube mates, music is more or less playing throughout my entire day. I love how certain songs can transport you to a specific place, time or memory. Certain lyrics perfectly articulate your feelings and certain beats force your hips to move. Maybe it’s the dancer in me, but I’ve always been amazed at how powerful music can be.
Usually, I’m big on making playlists. Before any party or road trip, I’m always compiling the perfect mix. But for my half marathon, I’m turning the playlist making duties over to my friends and family. I’m asking them to help compile the playlist I listen to while I run. I want songs that will motivate me, remind me of specific memories, and make me think of the people that have supported me along the way. To add a song to the playlist, donate $10 and all the proceeds will be donated to Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Full disclosure: This fundraiser wasn’t my idea. I helped a few colleagues do it last year when they ran the Boston Marathon. We set up white boards in the cafe and co-workers could see the songs that had been added so far or make a donation and add their own song. The variety of songs they ended up with (from Bieber to Celine Dion to Queen) was awesome and they said it was so much fun to listen to while they ran.
